Preveza: The Lady of The Ambracian Gulf

Your journey starts from the stunning coastal road towards the Venetian clock tower of Preveza. Your eye will be caught by dozens of neoclassical buildings and impressive churches such as that of Patron Saint Haralambous with its carved wooden temple. From the small pavements to… “Seytan Pazar” (Satan’s Bazaar) with its taverns and shops, food and drink in one of the famous eateries, a walk, an ice cream and relaxation, excursions to nearby beaches for sun, sea and moments of reflection in one of the most historically important places of the Ottoman rule in Epirus. Whichever way you look at it, Preveza will impress you.

Ancient Nicopolis: a unique Roman creation

Ancient Nicopolis was constructed by the Romans in 31 BC on the orders of the Emperor Augustus to commemorate his victory in the naval battle of Actium against Anthony and Cleopatra. Various artefacts survive in the archaeological museum of Preveza, while inside the archaeological site, there is the opportunity to admire the Roman Odeon, the aqueduct and the ruins of old Christian churches.

Acheron: The River of Death

In mythology, Acheron was known as the river which led to the Underworld. On the other hand, despite its name translating as “the river of woe” it is actually a place of incomparable charm and beauty. Its length is lined with small lakes and gorges and the Natura 2000 program has designated it a protected habitat due to its diverse ecosystem which boasts such a huge variety of flora and fauna. For those who love outdoor activities, Acheron is ideal for rafting, horse riding and hiking.

The Ambracian Gulf

One of the most important wetlands in the Mediterranean with a high level of fish production, the gulf has uniquely beautiful scenery, luscious overgrown areas, endless reeds, sheltered bays and moored fishing boats. It is often used as a passage by dolphins and loggerhead turtles and is also host to a rare species of wild pelican.

The Poet’s City

Preveza is the place where the poet Kostas Karyotakis spent the last years of his life. The house on Dardanelle Street remains intact while a bronze bust of the poet adorns the nearby Dardanelles Square.

Castle Fortresses

Guardians of the city, the castles of Saint Andrew and Pantokrator controlled the area around Preveza. In fact, from the castle of Pantokrator, built on the orders of Ali Pasha during his occupation of the city, the Turks were able to oversee navigation of the entire Ambracian Gulf.

Homage at the monument of Zalongo

About half an hour from the city of Preveza stands the renowned Mount Zalongo where the heroic women of Souli sacrificed themselves in order to avoid capture and enslavement by Ali Pasha. The Zalongo monument was erected on Mount Zalongo to commemorate those women who preferred to lose their lives rather than their freedom and their ideals.

Beaches

Just a few km away from the city of Preveza there are several beaches; small and large, sandy and rocky, all of them ideal for relaxation and swimming. The best include Monolithi which boasts the turquoise water of the Ionian sea, Kiani Akti with its giant eucalyptuses and the golden sands of Alonaki.

Gastronomy

Top of the list of traditional products of Preveza is roe; a local dish made from the eggs of the female Bafa fish fresh from the Ambracian Gulf. Equally famous is the drink “Kravada” made from the juice of the fruit of the dogwood tree. You should also try the renowned Ambracian shrimps, fresh fish and delicious pies.
