Zakynthos: The Flower of the East which blooms in the Ionian

The flower of the East (fiore di Levante) was the name the Venetians gave to this southernmost island of the Ionian Sea. Zakynthos, with all the charm and beauty of an impressive and self-sufficient place catches the eye with its idyllic beaches, traditional villages, deep blue caves and unique sights. Zakynthos is also home to the adorable loggerhead species of sea turtle (Caretta Caretta) who choose the beaches of this island to lay their eggs.

Greece’s first Marine Park

The first marine park in Greece was created with a view to protecting the loggerhead turtles which are an endangered species. With various innovative methods and in particular the designation of specific beaches as protected areas (such as Sekania) this marine park has helped to significantly reduce the threat to this delicate species.

From the Fortress to the streets of Bochali

One of the island’s most attractive spots is the village of Bochali which was built above the town of Zakynthos. This beautiful, small village ensures, due to its position, an incomparable view of Zakynthos. The old houses, small cafes and quaint cobbled streets will transport you to another era. Just outside the village you will find the fortress of Bochali which encloses the castle of the town inside of which the island’s capital began to flourish.

St. Dionysus: Patron Saint

The majestic church of St. Dionysus, the island’s patron saint is one of Greece’s most important pilgrimage sites. Crafted with exquisite hagiography and impressive icons, this glorious church plays host to the crowds of faithful who come eager to pray at the holy remains of the saint which are kept in a silver urn.

In the depths of the Blue Caves

The blue caves are located in the north of the island between Ag. Nikolaos and Skinari. Their fascinating structure and the reflections in the water inside them are what make them special. They can only be reached by boat, your own or a hired one which are available from many places around the island to take you to the caves.

Internationally renowned beaches and beauty spots

The island’s most famous landmark is “Navagio” (the shipwreck) one of the most famous beaches in the Mediterranean. Its beach and seabed of white pebbles and turquoise water make it extremely inviting. The name comes from the wrecked ship which washed up in this idyllic cove. The largest and busiest beach, Laganas, offers cafes and beach bars packed with tourists throughout the summer season, while the quieter area of Vasiliko, with beaches such as Geraka, Porto Roma, Banana and Agios Nikolaos, boasts crystal clear water and endless golden sands.

Marathonisi: the exotic islet

The small, uninhabited islet in the bay of Laganas called Marathonisi is another of Zakynthos’s important tourist attractions. Among its many appealing characteristics are its golden sands, turquoise waters, tropical vegetation and mysterious sea caves.

Zakynthian Gastronomy

In the traditional tavernas of Zakynthos you will have the opportunity to try some delicious local products: “Kavourmas” (pork confit) “Sofigadoura” (meat casserole), “ladotyri” (cheese and oil), “Pastelia” (nougat) and semolina fritters are just some of the culinary delights which will surely tempt you. Your meal can of course be accompanied by a fruity selection of wines produced exclusively in the local area.
