Anything is possible on Evia...

The second largest island after Crete, often brags because it offers visitors a huge variety of pleasures, like few Greek destinations can manage to combine.
It is fairly characterized as one of the most favorite destinations of the Athenians, as the distance between Evia and capital is negligible. To its  Advantages one can add the easy access by road via Halkida’s New High Bridge, which connects the island with the rest of the mainland as well as the coastal connection and daily crossings  to the beautiful islands of Skyros and Skiathos.

"Mythical" spa

The beneficial properties of Edipsos

The beneficial properties of Edipsos could not have been excluded from  ancient myths. Besides having been around for 20.000 years there have been numerous references in texts of major philosophers like Aristotle and Strabo. According to the legend, the hot springs of Edipsos was a divine creation. The goddess Athena asked her brother, the god Hephaestus, to bring springs with thermal waters up to the surface of the earth, which would bring back Hercules after his labours, to rest and heal his wounds. So as soon as Hephaestus hit the ground with a hammer the healing waters of Edipsos immediately sprang up.
Today Edipsos spa is synonymous of wellbeing, while the largest and oldest hotel group in the region, the Thermae Sylla offers hospitality to some of the most important, famous personalities every year.

The 'mad' waters of Evripos and their "uruly" course

The capital of Evia, Chalkida, became known, along with the unique tidalThe Evripos bridge phenomenon of Evripos. Its peculiar features are the great speed of the current and the disorder of movement. The 'mad' waters of Evripos move for three hours at very fast speed, while the next three at reduced speed and then change direction all together! So the ancients did not haphazardly call it  the sea of Euripos, considering that "Euripos" was often called anything volatile or unstable!
Many centuries before an explanation was given to this particular phenomenon, the philosopher Aristotle dealt with it, looking for the possible causes. Today visitors can observe the uniqueness of Evripos from the Old Bridge of Chalkida, at the end of the waterfront promenade.

The Cavo Doro winds ...

The mystery surrounding the Cavo Doro (or Kafirea) and the frequent,  strong winds is intensified by the stories that have the first Achaean fleet wrecked at that spot, on its return from Troy. Nafplios, son of Poseidon,  was considered responsible for the sinking  for wanting to avenge the murder of his son Palamedes.
In the Middle Ages the cape was given the  name Xylofagos, because of countless ships that had drifted from strong winds and had been wrecked there. Today Cavo Doro is one of the most difficult passages of the Mediterranean and also remains a challenge for even the most experienced sailors.

The myth of Lichas

The myth of Lichas

Those who have visited Lihadonisia reasonably call them "paradise" because of their incomparable, exotic beauty. Nevertheless, the myth around their creation has a dramatic ending to it. "Lichas" was the faithful servant of the demigod Hercules. When Hercules was wrathful with him he grabbed him and threw him to the Evian gulf. From the pieces of the unfortunate servant small islands named Lihadonisia were formed...!

Secrets of the Dragon

One of the greatest mysteries of the island is hosted in its southern part. The houses of the Dragon or Dragon House, as they are named, are stone buildings, made of giant plates without foundation or  windows. According to scientific studies, the difficulty lies in the structure size and the accurate positioning of the plates. That is why several years ago the local residents, unable to explain how one could carry plates of similar size, arrived at the conclusion that these structures were creations and dwellings of powerful dragons. The biggest dragon house preserved until today is on top of Mount Ochi.

The renowned towers and fortresses ...

Significant historical mementos, mainly the Venetian / Frankish (1204-1566 or even 1669-1797) and the Ottoman Period are the numerous towers which predominate all over the island.
The most important of them, which you can visit are: Significant historical towers

  • The fortress and the Tower of Karababa in Halkida:  Its name is likely to have emerged from Kara Baba Sultan. Today some surving spaces function as exhibition centers. In the castle entrance there is the tomb of the famous writer John Skarimbas.
  • The Tower Drosini in Gouves: A Venetian architecture building, made by  hard Turk Ibrahim Aga. After several years, the building became the property of the family of the famous poet Georgios Drosini and today it belongs to the municipality of Istiaia - Edipsos.
  • Twin Mitika / Lelantine towers:  Venetian buildings, made for the main purpose of oversight of the  water supply of Halkida. They functioned as a refuge for the locals during pirate and plunder raids.
  • The Castello Rosso in Karystos:  Also known as Red Castle, because of the reddish color of the stones which it was built with.
  • The Fyla Castle in Halkida:  This is the famous Castelli (or Likario) built above the village Fyla, within walking distance from Halkida.

The sheer wealth of the island is confirmed in every aspect of its history, whether based on myth or reality, and every mountain and pass, every coast and sunset. Evia remains a blank sheet  and is waiting for you to add to the book of memories of your own story!
