Kavo Doro, the cape of the Wrecks

The name came from Italian Cavo Duro, which translates as "hard" or "hard pass". Also known as Kafireas, the Cape in the southeastern tip of Evia is one of the most famous Greek names. The Strong winds that prevail in the area and quite often the extreme weather conditions baffle even the most experienced sailors. Historically the Cape was connected with famous shipwrecks and colonization settlements of the ancient period, in the Byzantine and Ottoman era. Today it remains one of the most striking sights of Southern Euboea. From the top of the small hill before reaching  the beach, you can contemplate the famous Arapi islet with the lighthouse-a landmark of the region.

The mysterious "Dragon Houses"

The mysterious Dragon Houses  The impressive stone buildings, 25 in number, are located between Karystos and Styra. For hundreds of years they pose unanswered questions because of their constructional peculiarity. When and by whom were they built? What was their purpose?

Early explanations give the legend real substance. Local legends speak of the terrible dragon that lived in the area and terrorized the residents. The steep and vigilant role of the buildings, the megalolithiki masonry and the unprecedented for those times craftsmanship of manufacturers led scientists to characterize the Drakospita as unique architectural monuments.

Theories that followed posit that these were either quarrymen shelters, as they were built near quarries, or temples dedicated to Zeus and Hera. Whichever explanation you choose to heed, it is certain that, at the sight of Drakospitayou will feel the awe of their splendour.

The most famous dragon house survives at the top of Mount Ochi, at an altitude of about 1400 meters. Excavations carried out inside the buildings produced  findings, which are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Karystos.

Exotic PetalioiThe exotic Petalioi beach

Petalioi with their colorful waters, the wide beaches and lush green  lure the mind to exotic delights. This small group of islands (10 in number) located opposite Marmari passed from the possession of Omer Bey, in the Turkish occupation, to John Paparigopoulos, then to King George I and finally to the Empeirikos family. The incomparable beauty of the aquamarine coastline, combined with golden sand are reminiscent of more exotic destinations rather than of a Greek beach. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy getting around by boat while heading to certain public beaches.

In ... the oasis of Dimosari

For those who are looking for beautiful and relatively easy routes, gorge Dimosari, in the northeastern part of Mount Ochi is a great option. Known for running waters forming small waterfalls and ponds, also known for its dense vegetation of trees, oak, heather and holly arboreal. When setting out from the settlement Lenosaioi and heading to the beach Kallianos, the route is calculated at approximately 10 km. The natural beauty especially the piece of Lenosaion Scala is the reward of the constant "explorer".

The Distos and its  importance

Marshes, reeds and intense biodiversity make up the backdrop of the protected wetland Dystos. The up until recently, lake is the habitat of over 180 species of birds and the rare Otter. Unfortunately in recent years  alarm bells have started to ring, as it tends to dry up and turn into farmland, despite its enormous environmental significance.

Historical museums and forests ...

The famous Kastanologos forest    One of the ornaments of the place, the Archaeological Museum of Karystos is housed in the Giokaleio Foundation and it preserves most of the history of South Evia. Through its collections  you will come into contact with the sculptures that were recovered in the area of Karystos, inscriptions, figurines and finds from the famous "Dragon House".

The last chestnut forest of southern Euboea, the Kastanologos constitutes a natural museum of ancient trees. At an altitude of 900-1100m, the highest peak east of Ochi, the wild chestnut trees cover an area of about 600 acres. Nature lovers will be astounded at the sight of the huge old trees and living creatures that nest in them. To get a closer look, follow either the path of the Dimosari Gorge or forest roads from the villages Metohi and Milloi.

Gastronomic feast and honey ...

The production of the honeyIf there is something Southern Evia is renown for, it is the produce  of the highly developed farming and beekeeping. Try and get the famous touloumisio cheese, local kefalograviera, kissouri honey known as rodomelo, and buy both thyme honey and flower honey. Do not leave the island before trying the local Kourkoubines of dough, and otherwise gkogklies, the Karystos tyropitaria, the pumpkin pie, fried pumpkin, sesame and traditional baklava.

While wine tourism is developing, producers of southern Evia try to keep the  winemaking tradition of the region, with exports throughout Greece and local wine festivals. In fact, there are quite a few distinctions that they have received at wine fairs nationwide. Taste it and you it will steal your heart at the first sip!
