Historical retrospective with its starting point the Old City

Alley in the Old City of ChaniaThe Old City of Chania is surrounded by Venetian walls and is embraced by the modern city of Chania. Exploring its alleys, one discovers centuries of history, since Chania have been conquered by the Romans, the Byzantines, the  Saracens, the Venetians and,  of course, the Turkish. This is observed by the architecture of the preserved buildings, which witness  different influences and periods.

In the Old Town you will find the Hill of Kasteli, which stands over Yali Mosque next to the Venetian harbor. The Hill was the first point inhabited in Chania since the Neolithic era, because there was the Acropolis of Kydonia.

Starting your walk in the Old Town, you will pass by the Municipal Market of Chania and then you will be directed to Stivanadika, the most commercial street of the city. In the center you will come across the Archaeological Museum, with exhibits covering the whole history of the city. Today the Mediterranean Architecture Centre is hosted in the Great Arsenali. At the end of the walls to the east the Gate of Ammos lies, or else Koum Kapi, leading to the settlement just outside the walls.
