Andros: Magnificent and elegant ...

Those who choose to visit Andros will be impressed. The charming elegance is the result of an ideal combination: the lush green landscape along with the classical  architecture of the Cycladic Islands. Whitewashed mansions, captains’ houses  and other prominent citizens’ adorn the town, archaeological findings of Venetian origin enrich the chapters of its history, crystal beaches with golden sand intensify its beauty. Your trip to Andros Island will offer you unique memories!

The rich Mainland

Andros Town occupies a place among the most imposing states of the Aegean. The old mansions of the captains and rich traders are its trademark, and the value of public buildings is timeless, among of which are the Kaireios Library and the Municipal Theatre. Wandering through the picturesque streets you will meet interesting museums, including the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art, important religious monuments, as the Assumption of the Virgin Mary as one of the most characteristic, small squares such as Riva, where the statue of the Unknown Sailor is found and part of the Venetian Lower Castle at the entrance of its harbor.

The Castles of Andros

Major attractions of the island are the Castle of Chora (Lower Castle) and Faneromeni Castle (Upper Castle). A narrow strip of sea separates the island of the Venetian Lower Castle from the Andros Town, which was a continuation of the section of the town. In contrast, the Faneromeni Castle was built 560 meters above sea level. Today, following the path of the village Kochilos, you will find remains of its walls, its  houses and aquaducts of the castle state, like the church of Faneromeni.

The Lighthouse of the fairytale

The image of the Lighthouse of Tourliti, at the entrance of the port of Andros reminds of a fairytale. This is because it is the only lighthouse which was built on a rock in the sea. This impressive building is dated back to 1887.

The contemporary art, an integral part of the beauty of Andros!

Andros, the  birthplace of V. Goulandris hosts the Museum of Contemporary Art in its mainland. The initiative taken by him and his wife Eliza was to build a place on the island, which will house works of art by important Greek artists, including G. Tsarouhis, A. Phasianos and N.Hatzikyriakos Gikas. The exhibits which are organized every year attract people from all over the world.

Natural Charm

The cave of Aladino and the Waterfalls of Pithara exemplify the natural charm of the island. Four kilometers from the town of Andros you will find the village of Aladino, with its cave of the eight halls full of impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
In a lush scenery, a few minutes from the Apikia the renowned waterfalls of Pithara dominate the place. The fast, running waters in combination with the natural beauty compose beautiful pictures!

Journey to the Ancient Zagora

The Geometric period is revived on the remnants of the ancient Zagora. The thriving Zagora during antiquity was considered one of the largest settlements on the island. Archaeological excavations have brought to light residential foundations and part of its wall, while the pottery, the tools and utensils that have survived, are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Andros.

Beaches of dazzling beauty

There are two reasons why you will never forget the beaches of Andros. First and most important, their  incomparable beauty! The second one has to do with ... their particular names. You should not be surprised, however, if they encourage you to visit the "Old Woman's Leap", the ‘Backward glasses’, the Chalkolimniona or the Cork. These are some of the most charming beaches of the Aegean Sea, with turquoise waters, golden sand and green lush landscape surrounding them. Especially visitors love the busy ones such as Achla, Golden Sand and the cosmopolitan Batsi.

Gastronomy

Staying in  Andros offers unprecedented tasty  delights. The island is famous for its huge variety of traditional cheeses, such as chloro, the milking and the Volaki. You will be impressed by the delicious sausages and pork meat, from which the sisyra, tsigarida, pichti and paspala come. A  classic and very loved recipe is the fourtalia and the most authentic one is the Andros omelette with sausages. If you want your meal to be accompanied by a delicious dessert, the ideal choices are the almond pastes, the pastelaries with the dried figs and cinnamon as well as the sweets, especially those derived from fragrant lemon blossoms.
