    Thrace

    On the Map

Thrace: Between East and West, a multicultural place ...

At the point where the West was joined with the East, the Muslim influence touched the Christian tradition. The result was that a striking crama was created through the coexistence of peoples, despite their different cultural backgrounds ending up to live together harmoniously. You will feel by yourselves when you visit Xanthi, Komotini and Alexandroupolis. Thrace is perhaps one of the most interesting destinations in Greece. Its history is unfolded starting from the Byzantine times and continues to the medieval and Ottoman times. The delta of Evros and the River Nestos, Lake Vistonida and Porto Lagos, Abdera and ancient Maronia, the Pomak villages, the Castle of Kale in Didymoteichon, the lighthouse of Alexandroupolis and the Eski Mosque in Komotini, are just some of the attractions that should not be ignored, when you feel ready to explore it!

Images of nature that will magnetize you!

Forests, mountains, lakes, waterfalls... Whatever you are looking for is here! The charm and magic of nature was shared among the three prefectures of Thrace and created wonderful natural landscapes. On the delta of Evros and Nestos you will encounter a remarkable fauna, and often protected species. The waterfall of Livaditi in Xanthi is indeed impressive, and the Dadia forest is a unique European space in which the rare kind of black vultures will be found. On the other hand, Vistonida lake has one of the most beautiful wetlands, which is worth visiting.

    Culture durable in time…

The cities of Thrace, not only experienced, but loved and assimilated the elements of the Islamic culture, which the Muslim inhabitants brought with them. This is why you will encounter mosques of unique aesthetics, such as the Eski Mosque and Yeni Mosque in the city of Komotini. In Xanthi, the old stone houses of the city give you the feeling of traveling back in time. The beautiful Alexandroupolis with the lighthouse as its trademark, also houses the Ethnological Museum of Thrace, which will provide you with all the necessary knowledge about the culture of the region. In Soufli you will encounter the famous dollhouses of sericulture and in Komotini the famous clock tower. In your journey you could not include a stop at Pomakochoria, the mountainous, remote villages that strongly resist in time.
The presence of archaeological sites is essential. Ancient Abdera, the birthplace of the philosopher Democritus are located just a few kilometers from Xanthi, a town of Ancient Maronia with the ancient theater which dominates the Rodopi region, while the castle of Calais in Didymoteichon is perhaps one of the greatest attractions of Thrace.

    Action and fun

The rivers Nestos and Evros attract the eyes. On the one hand, Nestos calls to test your strength, giving you the opportunity to enjoy rafting, kayaking, trekking, mountain biking and horseback riding. On the other hand, Evros is ideal for bird watching in its Delta, while you will come across wonderful trails for trekking in the forest of Dadia.
While in Thrace you will not find the typical, large beaches, there is, however, an interesting coastline washed by the Aegean Sea. In a short distance from Alexandroupoli you meet the beaches of Agia Paraskevi ,Makris, New Chiles, EOT, Dikella and St. George (or Demir Ali), all of them are organized, with excellent tourist facilities such as lodgings, restaurants, beach bar & cafes. Because in Thrace you will not be deprived of anything!

Flavors with the "temperament" of the East

The distinctive aromas and intense flavors of Thrace are unique. Here the Greek cuisine is embellished with oriental elements and creates the most tasty combinations. Kebab, pastourma pies, sauerkraut, sausages from Soufli, tahini, fresh fish and local meat, seasonings for 'strong' flavors, wine from the vineyards of Maronia, tsipouro from Iasmos and traditional pasta such as oumats are the flavors that you must try.
The oriental pastries are famous, which you will find in abundance, such as soutzouk loukoum, the saragli ,the kazan dipi and kantaifi.
