THE CYCLADES

If you were to try to imagine the perfect holiday scene how would you describe it? Here is one alternative. The famous sunset of Oia in the background, all of the culinary excellence of Siphnos on your plate, swimming and relaxing on the exotic beaches of Milos, walking and shopping in the elegant town of Andros, a pilgrimage to the dazzling church of the Virgin Mary of Tinos, drinks, entertainment and delirium in the narrow streets of Mykonos…….. Sun, white buildings, bougainvillea and the aura of the sea…. Welcome to The Cyclades!

Sights

Magical places which have stood the test of time. Some manmade, others pure, untouched, just as nature created them. Castles, stunning caves, ruins of ancient cities, dazzling temples, whitewashed chapels and retreats, statues, theatres, forests, fairytale villages, all the rare sights of nature and the Cycladic civilization. Each place has a different history. Choose the island that suits you and explore its rich history from end to end. The temple of Apollo and the Kouroi of Naxos, the volcano of Santorini, the theatre of Syros, said to be a miniature of Milan’s La Scala, the Pytharas waterfall at Andros, the archaeological site at Delos, Mykonos’s “Little Venice” and the Venetian castle in Seriphos are just a taste the experiences you will be offered. The entire Cycladic civilization spread before your eyes. All that’s left is to decide; which season will you choose to travel?

Religious Tourism

White buildings, the blue of the Aegean and religious devoutness. The Cyclades are full of churches and chapels with a view of the Aegean, impressive hagiography and miracle-working icons. One of the largest pilgrimages in the country takes place in Tinos. It is of course the pilgrimage to the impressive church of the Virgin Mary of Tinos. Equally imposing are the churches of Panagia Ekatontapiliani in Paros, Zoodochou Pigis in Naxos, St. Nicholas in Syros and the Virgin Mary in Folegandro. The coexistence between Orthodox and Catholic is also worth noting, something which has led to the creation of some splendid Catholic churches such as St. George’s in Syros.

Beaches

Golden sands, white pebbles, turquoise water… Search for your ideal beach among the numerous selection of lively ones. Sarakiniko beach, Milos with its white rocks, the endless sandy beach of Plaka at Naxos, Achla, Andros with its emerald waters, the vast Galisas of Syros, cosmopolitan Elia of Mykonos, the black stones of Vlichada, Santorini, Colona of Kythnos with a wide strip of sand which divides the sea in two. All these are well worth visiting. Each and every destination has its own perfect beaches, big or small, secluded or crowded.

Activities

The beaches of the Cyclades boast one of the most organized infrastructures for watersports in the whole of Greece. Paros, for example, is considered by many to be the ultimate destination for kite surfing and windsurfing. On Seriphos visitors can try sea kayaking, in Naxos and Koufonisia many try diving, while in Mykonos there are some extremely well organized surfing schools.

Gastronomy

The Aegean islands have a reputation for serving good food. If you like meat try “Louza” in Tinos, “Lagaro” in Anafi, “Loza” in Kea, sausages in Mykonos. You should also try split peas (fava) in Amorgos, the cheeses of Andros and Folegandros, baked chick peas in Paros, “Loukoumia” (Turkish delight) and “Chalvadopita” in Syros and honey from thyme in Tinos. A glass of “Raki” in Amorgos, a few sips of “Pontzi” from Andros or the raki of Tinos and you will soon be in the mood for anything!
